What is special about our Italian roast coffee?

Spoiler alert! As popular and as beautiful as the tradition of Italian coffee is, Italian Roast coffee doesn’t actually come from Italy. Strange right? But fear not, this doesn’t make it any less delicious. Coffee plants are unable to grow in Italy due to the climate, so the beans are sourced from all over the world to create the perfect coffee blend. Italian roast coffee is all about the style in which the beans are roasted to produce oily, dark coffee beans which gives it its celebrated charred, smoky sensation.
About Italian Roast Coffee
What makes Italian roast coffee so special, you may ask? The coffee beans are all uniquely roasted past the ‘second crack’ at around 245°C encouraging the oils and sweet yet charred flavours to surface. During the roasting a chemical reaction occurs where amino acids and sugars react to heat, producing browning. This process gives the beans their legendary extra dark roast.
Ur Special’s unique and original Spesh blend is an Italian dark roast blend of arabica coffee, uniting beans from Brazil, Nicaragua and Columbia with speciality grade robusta. Spesh blend creates the perfect coffee moment, with its traditional Italian essence and extra dark, heavy coffee flavour. Bellissima!
Is Dark Roast Coffee Stronger?
Dark roast coffee is sometimes thought to be stronger due to its punchy taste. However, this is a myth! Although it may taste stronger due to its dark roast, it does not contain any more caffeine than a light roast. Which ultimately means we can drink more delightful Italian roast coffee like Spesh Blend, without the concern of consuming too much caffeine. Fantastica!
French or Italian?
A lot of comparisons have been made between French and Italian coffee. This is because they are reported to be ‘similar’. Firstly, both countries have to import coffee beans from around the world as coffee plants are unable to thrive in the cool French and Italian climate. Both roasting styles take the coffee beans right to the edge of charring, creating a dark roasted blend, so technically French coffee follows the same initial process as Italian. It is roasted to the ‘second crack’ until the oils surface and the beans have turned dark brown.
So, what is the difference?
French coffee is ultimately not as dark as Italian. Italian coffee is roasted for a much longer duration, resulting in a more bitter, smoky and robust taste. Italian dark roast coffee is widely preferred across the globe and especially in Europe because of its extra dark kick. So, we know you are going to amore Spesh Blend!
